not too hard, nor too easy
warbisizer on Wednesday, January 03, 2007
This test was a little bit harder than I had expected, but I passed with 757. Many questions on managing SQL Server itself (DBCC, backups, SQL Server settings, protocols, etc.), lots of SQL, lots of time spent analyzing code, and many questions on security and logins. There were several questions that required knowlege of various topics. i.e.- a question about database modification that also requires knowlege about certain security terms. (don't accuse me of piracy, I made that example up!) Tricky! Every test is quite different, so this may not be the case for YOU if you're preparing to take it.
I purchased the SelfTest practice exams for SQL 2000 Admin, SQL 2000 Design, and Win 2000 Server. I HIGHLY recommend them as they are closer to the real thing than any other practice tests that I've seen out there, and between the included flash cards and answer explanations, cover almost everything that is necessary, without a bunch of other junk that is not on the tests.
Somewhat difficult

I passed with an 811, but about 5 or 6 questions were pretty ticky. For the rest of the exam most of the questions were common sense and read the question carefully and take your time. It is not as hard as you think it is.
Disaster time.

The test was hard even with MS Books lots of practice tests. The first terminal I sat at locked up. Halfway through the test the remaining terminal (there were only two)did the same. I convinced the proctors to fix the !@#$@ machine in order to continue but by the time they did, a whole hour was gone. Passed with 730.
Easier than SQL 2000 Dev

The usual things you'd expect for administration of SQL Server. Lots to read like the developer exam, but overall it was less demanding.
Do both training courses!
j_a_saunders on Thursday, November 11, 2004
I did the training course 2072A Administering A MS SQL Server 2000 last week and about half the quest I got out of the 45 weren't covered on the training course. Do the course Course 2073 Programming a Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Database, which is for 70-229 before you do either exam as then together you've covered all the exam topics and can pass both exams fairly easily.
I still passed with a score of 752, but could have done better.
Be sure, very sure

Most questions have a selection of answers that all seem correct, but in reality, the right answer is the one that best solves the question.
There a few trick questions like how to allow someone access to SQL Server using the Guest account over the Internet; Pulling data in from multiple locations with least effort; Setting idle time with the @@IDLE (which can't be done as @@IDLE is read only).
My score was 679 on first try and have studied for about 3 weeks (missed one too many questions). I'm a web developer with more experience over in 70-229 land.
Question difficulty varies
wiljane3 on Wednesday, June 16, 2004
I found the test to contain a wide variety as far as question difficulty. About 1/3 of them were very easy, about 10 (of the 45) questions were quite hard and had me second guessing myself a little, and the rest fell somewhere in between.
I passed on my second try (missing the first time by one question) with moderate study and 2+ years experience working with SQL Server 2000.
INDEXES!

Make sure you know diff between clustered and nonclustered indexes, and how to optimize db design based upon the query being used.
tough test...

Sat the exam twice. Failed first time due to insufficient study. Passed second time, make sure you read and understand the questions. Understand how security works, how to optimise performance and recovery techniques.
